The Critique
In this short story, Liam O'Flaherty created his character in a very cool way. He develops the character by telling you their thoughts and actions in the heated sniper battle he is in. Throughout the story he tells of how he handles himself and his mindset. Reading the story you can tell that this sniper is skilled, but he may take to many risks. Also, he uses figurative language throughout, with similes dominating, for example: "Here and there through the city, machine guns and rifles broke the silence of the night, spasmodically, like dogs barking on lone farms." Also this story's sentence structure is long sentences that are very descriptive, I personally like the sentence structure because it really gets the point across and paints a picture in the reader's head (for example: Dublin lay enveloped in darkness but for the dim light of the moon that shone through the fleecy clouds, casting a pale light as of approaching dawn over the streets and the dark waters of Liffey).
